Citrine is a stone of abundance, joy, and success. A golden yellow variety of Quartz and the birthstone for November (along with Topaz), it gets its name from the French word "citron" meaning "lemon", although it is also called the "Lucky Merchant's Stone" because its ability to bring success in business. It is quite rare in its natural form, but heat-treated forms with the same properties are widely available [7]. The precise history of Citrine is still up for debate, but it is believed to have been used as far back as 300 BC in Greece and could have been given as a gift to celebrate prosperity and luck, as it is still used today.

Today, Citrine is found and made all over the world, including Brazil, France, India, Kazakhstan, Madagascar, Russia, Sri Lanka, the UK, Uruguay, and the USA.

Chemical Formula: SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide)

Crystal System: Trigonal

Mohs Hardness: 7

Colors: Yellow, Pale Yellow, Golden Yellow, Amber, Honey, Muted Brown

Citrine (although characterized by its bright yellow color) is a softer yellow in its natural form and can appear as dark a smoky brown. The heat-treated pieces are the more vibrant pieces. Citrine can also be found with sparkles and rainbow inclusions inside it.

NOTE: Citrine is fairly durable and safe in water, although it may be subject to fading in prolonged exposure to sunlight [3][5]. However, be aware that heat-treated Amethyst can turn yellow and is commonly sold as Citrine [8][9]. Scroll down to learn more about heat-treated Amethyst.

Healing Properties of Citrine

Abundance, Creativity, Energy, Happiness, Joy, Luck, Manifestation, Success, Wealth, Wonder

Spiritually, Citrine dissipates negative energy and replaces it with innocent joy and wonder. It never holds this negativity, so it can be good for those who are vulnerable to outside energies and negative influences holding you back. This new space for positivity can bring manifestations of prosperity, abundance, and wealth, as it is highly protective in finance and can bring success in business. It can also help ease discourse between family or in groups, making way for stronger cooperation.

Emotionally and mentally, Citrine is highly uplifting and revitalizing. It can build positive self-esteem, confidence, and security to overcome pessimism and doubt that blocks you from reaching your goals and moving forward with optimism for the future. It can also be especially useful in enhancing concentration, creativity, imagination, memory, and wise decision-making to spark passion in your work.

Physically, Citrine is an energizing stone. It can invigorate the body and mind, bringing new life and vitality to enhance bodily functions, especially metabolic functions and the digestive system. It can also balance hormones and help maintain clear, healthy skin.

Crystal Pairings

Blue Kyanite, an aluminum silicate mineral, may be the opposite of Citrine, but it is one of the only other crystals that does not to be cleansed (along with other Kyanites). Both crystals protect you from absorbing negative energy, helping you see truth and joy in life. Blue Kyanite can also connect you with your inner voice and spirit guides to encourage honesty and bring understanding of problems in the form of dreams. Where Citrine focuses more on the physical and works best during the day, Blue Kyanite focuses more on the spiritual and works best during the night, and since they are the only crystals that don't hold on to negative energy, together they make an unstoppable pair.

Heat-Treated Quartz vs Citrine

Natural Citrine is hard to come by, so most of the time, heat-treated Amethyst or Smoky Quartz is sold as Citrine, as it turns yellow when treated properly [5][8][9]. Some argue that heat-treating crystals is just speeding up natural processes, so it only really matters if you prefer knowing it's naturally formed and don't mind the larger cost.

On a metaphysical and chemical level, the difference is not big as the properties are still the same. Both natural Citrine and Citrine made from heat-treated Quartz are stones of abundance and success. They can help materialize manifestations and wealth and stimulate joy, positive self-esteem, and passion to overcome doubt or pessimism. They can also increase energy and focus to help you work towards your goals and inspire imagination and creative decision making.

Golden Healer Quartz (left) and Citrine (right)

Golden Healer Quartz vs Citrine

Golden Healer Quartz is another golden yellow variety of Quartz that can be almost indistinguishable with some lower quality Citrine. However, Golden Healer Quartz has a different chemical compound that includes Iron (and other impurities at times) to give it it's golden color. It is also opaquer than higher quality Citrine and tends to be slightly darker.

When it comes to healing properties, Golden Healer Quartz and Citrine also vary. Where Citrine focuses more on everyday success, joy, and abundance, Golden Healer Quartz focuses more on multidimensional healing. With its higher vibration, it is best used in meditation to connect with higher realms, expanding consciousness while working directly to ground you and amplify your intentions.
